Here's my entry for D'Artiste: Matte Painting 2 book. I'm happy to say it will be featured in the next volume. It was done at 4000px wide.

Story: A land untouched by civilization, by the pollution of man kind. A land preserved through all the ages to be one of nature's finest secrets. A secret, that must be kept safe for all to experience the serene scope of the wild.

Temple Of Knowledge | Matte Painting/Composite

* UPDATED 10/15/2004 *
- changed perspective on the greek columns
- I've changed the waterfall color and brightness to more orange per the environment, and gave it more detail. Also added a "shoreline" to the right mountain of the temple to give it better integration. Also tweaked the reflections slightly to match the shoreline. Thanks all for the comments and crits!
Hey all!
I just finished this digital matte painting for matte painting class. For this assignment, find images of shrines/temples, and make an environment for the shrine to make it not of a particular origin and culture. Fantasy type setting.
Preliminary composite done in Photoshop, then animated and multi-planed in After Effects with the leaves and waterfall done with Maya Particles. Mesh Warping on the tree and branches, and turbulent/displacement maps on the clouds and water for animation.
Full video resolution Divx 5.1 4000kbs compression with 128kbs mp3 audio to retain high quality viewing.
Screenshots, animation and the making of video below, hope you guys enjoy!
This is the main intro/ending matte painting composite from my super short film, The Neverending Story: The Renewal...the movie based on the themes of...The Neverending Story! It was a movie that greatly inspired me and awes me to this day ever since I saw it as a little kid. And so it got me to making this super short film visual effects film based on it's motif's (the destruction of Fantasia because human imagination is lacking, and the saving of it from people's spark of imagination and creativity).
It got nominated for Best Visual Effects at my school's Spring Show 2005. 5 Matte paintings, 13 greenscreen shots.

Temple of Souls | Matte Painting/Composite

Story:
"Fate consumes all, and when it was her turn, she looked back upon the world, now covered in a dark-blue moon glow haze in another dimension, one last time, before descending into the nexus of souls. A clothed figure stood at the doorway with a torch, awaiting for all who have passed on from the world of the living. Perhaps as a last consolation of human contact and conversation.
As she becomes consumed by the murky darkness, the pyre of blue flames on top of the nexus dissolves her body and soul and fires it up into the heavens for further judgement. Like a great war cannon, the pylons sound thundered and wailed, heavy with the indirect suffering it caused."
-
Blue screen key composite, and matte painting done in Shake. Clone painting interactive light and touchup done in Photoshop. Particles in Maya.

Lunar Legend | Matte Painting/Composite

Story/Concept:
"A legend, can it be true? In the full moonlight's ray, under the fridgid blue cold, will emerge a runic sword. Formed of ice, and magic, the sword constantly emits pressure of intense yet playfully wispful snow. This was where the true stone hedge originates.
The monlithic Celtic stones you see in present day were actually done in homage to this great legend heard thousands of years ago. The original stones were lost some ages ago, so the surrounding people built a replica of the legendary stones to remind them of how great an artifact used to exist before their time."
*
Time to make abouut 5 hours for preliminary look, then extra 20 hours or so to get the animation and renders working in After Effects/Maya.
*
The second shot is just to add more story, a full 3D scene of the sword upclose.
